French health insurance: a new app in test
The health insurance card in France is likely to be phased out in the near future and be replaced by an app. This app will be trialled in two départements (Rhône and Alpes Maritime initially) this summer (an experimentation decree has yet to set the dates), with a view to extending it to the entire country from 2021 if the results are positive.

This project is part of the roadmap for “accelerating the digital shift” in the health sector presented by the Minister for Health, which includes, among other measures, the digitisation of prescriptions (including prescribing drugs).
The objective is to make prescriptions easier for professionals (doctors and pharmacists) and users, simplify online procedures, allow fees to be updated automatically (without having to sign on to a terminal) and reduce the risks of forgetfulness, loss and theft.
For people who do not have a smartphone or who are reluctant to adopt digital technologies, the physical card will still be available after 2021.
